Hopf asked whether the six-sphere admits a complex structure. Borel and Serre showed that S² and S⁶ are the only spheres with almost complex structures, and the question for S⁶ remained open. In August 2026, Alpöge posted a manuscript, produced by Claude under his direction, constructing a complex structure on S⁶; Engel subsequently gave a geometric account of the construction with a self-contained proof. This talk will cover the background of the problem, the construction following Engel, and the topological argument showing that the resulting manifold is diffeomorphic to S⁶. No background in algebraic geometry is assumed.
